The list of wild animals in the flashcards above is incomplete because it is restricted to familiar animals.
The source of the list of male and female animal names used is
a
Term Coordination page published by the EU (we have not used the
entire list). Note that the males and females of several species are
given the same name—for instance, the females of elephants, rats,
and whales may be referred to as cows
(!)—so you will often
have to add in the species—in our examples elephant cow
or
whale cow
—if the context does not make clear which female
animal you are talking about.

A comment similar to that of the previous section applies to animal
babies: since the terminology can be common across species, it is sometimes
necessary to add the species name—for instance, the term calf
usually means a baby bovine, so that when we mean that of another
species, we would have to add information, such as in whale calf
.
