Basic vocabulary

The list of domestic animals in the flashcards above is incomplete because it does not include most of the more exotic domesticated animals and pets. You can find a more complete list, together with pictures, in this Wikipedia article.

Vocabulary for male and female animals

The source of the list of male and female animal names used is a Term Coordination page published by the EU (we have not used the entire list). Note that the males and females of several species are given the same name—for instance, the females of both elephants and rats may be referred to as "cows"(!)—so you will often have to add in the species—in our examples "elephant cow" or "rat cow"—to make clear which female animal you are talking about.

Vocabulary for animal babies

A comment similar to that of the previous section applies to animal babies: since the terminology can be common across species, it is sometimes necessary to add the species name—for instance, the term "calf" usually means a baby cow or bull, so that when we mean that of another species, we would have to add information, such as in "elephant calf".
